Overview

Tick-borne encephalitis is spread by tick bites in forested parts of Europe and northern Asia, and children who play outdoors are particularly exposed.

It can affect the brain and nervous system, so vaccination is worth considering for family trips involving woodland or rural activity.

Frequently asked questions

How many doses do I need before travel?

2 doses give good protection for the season. The second dose can be given as early as 14 days after the first on an accelerated schedule.

What should I do if I find a tick on me?

Remove it promptly with fine tweezers, gripping close to the skin and pulling steadily. Clean the area and seek medical advice if you develop a rash, fever or flu-like symptoms.

Which countries carry TBE risk?

Risk areas include much of central, northern and eastern Europe, including parts of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia and the Baltics, plus Russia and parts of Asia. We check current risk maps for your route.

How long does protection last?

After the 3-dose primary course, boosters are typically recommended every 3 to 5 years for ongoing risk, depending on age.
