Overview
Chickenpox is usually mild in young children but can be considerably more serious in teenagers, adults and pregnancy.

We check whether you have had chickenpox before, as many people are already immune without realising it.
A two dose course
Two doses are given four to eight weeks apart, giving strong and long lasting protection.

Frequently asked questions
My child already had chickenpox. Do they need the vaccine?
Usually not. Natural infection generally gives lasting immunity. If you are unsure whether it was chickenpox, we can discuss options at your assessment.
Why is chickenpox vaccination not routine on the NHS?
It is offered on the NHS only to specific groups. Many families choose private vaccination to avoid the illness, time off school and work, and the small risk of complications.
Can adults have the chickenpox vaccine?
Yes. Adults who never had chickenpox often benefit most, as the illness tends to be more severe in adulthood. Two doses are needed.
Does the vaccine prevent shingles later in life?
Vaccinated people can still develop shingles, but evidence suggests the risk is lower than after natural chickenpox infection.
