Overview

Flu is far more than a heavy cold, and each winter it causes serious illness, hospital admission and time off work across the UK.

The vaccine is updated every year to match circulating strains, so annual vaccination is needed for continued protection.

Quick appointment, seasonal protection

A short assessment followed by a single injection into the upper arm, with protection developing over about two weeks.

Best had in autumn

Ideally have your vaccine between September and early November, ahead of the main flu season, though later is still worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to have the flu vaccine?

Early autumn is ideal, before flu starts circulating widely, but vaccination remains worthwhile throughout the winter season.

Can the flu vaccine give me flu?

No. The injected vaccine contains no live virus. A mild sore arm or short-lived aches are signs of your immune system responding, not flu.

Why do I need a flu vaccine every year?

Flu viruses change constantly, and protection fades over time. Each season the vaccine is updated to match the expected strains.

Can I have the flu vaccine with other vaccines?

Yes. It can be given alongside most other vaccines, including shingles and travel vaccines, at the same appointment.
