Overview

Shingles is a painful rash caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, and can lead to long lasting nerve pain.

Risk rises with age and with a weakened immune system, and Shingrix substantially reduces both the chance of shingles and of lasting nerve pain.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I consider the shingles vaccine?

Around 1 in 4 people develop shingles in their lifetime, and the risk of lasting nerve pain rises sharply with age. The vaccine substantially reduces both risks.

I have already had shingles. Should I still be vaccinated?

Yes, vaccination is generally recommended after recovery, as shingles can recur. We will advise on timing at your assessment.

Is this the same vaccine as the NHS one?

The modern non-live vaccine used privately is the same type now used in the NHS programme. Private vaccination is an option if you are not yet in an eligible NHS age group.

Can I have it with the flu vaccine?

Yes, it can be given at the same appointment as the flu vaccine and most other vaccines.
