Overview

Earwax is normal, but a build-up can cause blocked ears, muffled hearing, discomfort or ringing.

Microsuction is a gentle, water-free method that removes wax under direct vision using magnification and low-pressure suction.

Examination first, then treatment

We examine both ears before treating, and explain clearly if wax is not the cause of your symptoms.

Immediate improvement in most cases

Most people notice their hearing improve straight away, and the appointment covers both ears.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use ear drops before my appointment?

Yes, ideally. Olive oil drops 2 to 3 times daily for 3 to 5 days beforehand soften wax and make removal quicker and more comfortable.

Is microsuction painful?

It should not hurt. You will hear suction noise and may feel a light sensation in the ear. Tell the clinician at any point if you are uncomfortable.

What if you do not find any wax?

If your ears are clear or the problem is not wax, we will say so, charge appropriately for the examination, and advise on next steps.

Is microsuction better than syringing?

Microsuction uses no water and is carried out under direct vision, making it suitable for many people who cannot have irrigation, including those with previous ear surgery or perforation.
