Overview

Rabies is a viral infection spread through the bite, scratch or lick of an infected animal, and is almost always fatal once symptoms begin.

Pre-travel vaccination simplifies and improves treatment if you are exposed, which matters most where medical care is remote or rabies treatment is hard to obtain.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need treatment if I am bitten after vaccination?

Yes. You must still seek urgent medical care after any bite or scratch, but you will need fewer doses and no rabies immunoglobulin, which can be very hard to obtain abroad.

How long does the course take?

3 doses over 3 to 4 weeks, so book at least a month before travel where possible. We will advise if your time is shorter.

How long does protection last?

Immune memory is long-lasting. Frequent travellers or those with ongoing risk may be advised to have a booster after 1 year. We will advise at your assessment.

Is the rabies vaccine worth it for a short holiday?

It depends on your destination and activities. For short stays in resorts the risk may be low, but remote travel, cycling and animal contact raise it. Our clinician will help you decide.
