Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes in rural parts of Asia, particularly around rice fields and pig farming.

How long does the course take?
The standard course is 2 doses 28 days apart. Adults travelling sooner can have an accelerated schedule with both doses 7 days apart.
Do I need this vaccine for a city-based trip?
Usually not for short urban stays, as risk is concentrated in rural areas. Longer trips, rural travel and seasonal factors change the picture, so we assess your specific itinerary.
How long does protection last?
After the primary course, a booster is typically recommended after 12 to 24 months for those at continued risk. We will advise at your assessment.
What else can I do to protect myself?
Use insect repellent, cover up in the evenings and sleep under nets or in screened rooms. Bite avoidance also protects against dengue and malaria.
