Overview

Dengue is a viral infection spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes, common across Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and parts of Africa.

Most cases are mild, but repeat infection with a different strain carries a higher risk of severe illness, which is why previous infection matters when we assess you.

Assessment including previous infection

We ask carefully about any past dengue illness, as this influences both the benefit of vaccination and the advice we give you.

A two dose course

The course is two doses three months apart, so it suits travellers planning ahead rather than those leaving imminently.

Frequently asked questions

Why does previous dengue infection matter?

Evidence shows the vaccine works best and most safely in people who have had dengue before. UK guidance therefore focuses on this group. We assess your history carefully before recommending it.

I have never had dengue. Can I still be vaccinated?

In some circumstances, after a detailed discussion of benefits and limitations against current guidance. Bite avoidance remains your key protection either way.

How long does the course take?

2 doses 3 months apart, so start at least 3 months before travel where possible. We will advise if your trip is sooner.

How else can I avoid dengue?

Use repellent through the day, as dengue mosquitoes bite in daylight, wear covering clothing and choose screened or air-conditioned accommodation.
