Overview

Cholera is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water that can cause severe watery diarrhoea and rapid dehydration.

Dukoral is taken as a drink rather than an injection, and also offers some short term protection against one common cause of travellers' diarrhoea.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cholera vaccine an injection?

No, it is an oral drink taken at the clinic. Adults need 2 doses taken 1 to 6 weeks apart.

Do most travellers need this vaccine?

No. Risk for typical tourism is very low. It is mainly recommended for aid workers and travel to outbreak or poor-sanitation areas. We will advise honestly at your assessment.

How long does protection last?

Around 2 years for adults after the primary course. A booster is recommended if you remain at risk beyond that.

Does it protect against travellers' diarrhoea generally?

Its purpose is protection against cholera specifically. Food and water precautions remain your main defence against travellers' diarrhoea.
