Overview

Period delay tablets can postpone your period for a holiday, wedding, exam or event, using a short course of norethisterone.

Taken from a few days before your period is due, they delay bleeding until you stop, with your period usually arriving a few days later.

Frequently asked questions

How does period delay work?

The tablets maintain hormone levels so the womb lining is not shed. You start them about 3 days before your period is due and your period arrives a few days after stopping.

How long can I delay my period?

Typically up to around 17 days, depending on the course supplied. Your pharmacist will tailor this to your plans.

Can I use period delay if I am on the pill?

If you take a combined pill you can often delay your period by adjusting how you take it, without extra tablets. Ask us and we will explain how, or check your suitability either way.

Is period delay contraception?

No. The usual period delay tablet is not a contraceptive and does not prevent pregnancy. Use your normal contraception as usual.
