Overview

Jet lag happens when your body clock is out of step with local time, most noticeably after crossing several time zones eastward.

Melatonin can help your body clock adjust more quickly, alongside practical advice on light exposure, sleep timing and caffeine.

Frequently asked questions

Why is flying east worse for jet lag?

Flying east shortens your day, and body clocks adjust more easily to lengthening days than shortening ones. Eastward trips therefore usually need more planning.

How quickly will I adjust to a new time zone?

Unaided, roughly one time zone per day. A good light, sleep and treatment plan can meaningfully speed this up.

What can I do on the flight to reduce jet lag?

Set your watch to destination time, sleep and eat by destination schedule where practical, stay hydrated and go easy on alcohol and caffeine.

Is jet lag treatment safe?

For most healthy adults, short courses are well tolerated when used correctly. We confirm suitability against your health and medicines at the assessment.
