Frequently asked questions
What do my blood pressure numbers mean?
The higher number is the pressure when your heart beats, the lower when it rests. We explain your specific reading and what, if anything, to do about it.
How often should I have my blood pressure checked?
For most adults, at least every few years, and yearly from 40. Known high blood pressure or borderline readings need more frequent monitoring.
What happens if my reading is high?
One high reading is not a diagnosis. We usually advise repeat checks or home monitoring, and refer you to your GP where the pattern suggests treatment may be needed.
Do I need to prepare for the check?
Avoid caffeine, exercise and smoking for 30 minutes beforehand, and arrive a few minutes early so you can be rested and seated for an accurate reading.
